Because the trust is "revocable," you can modify, amend, or revoke it entirely at any time during your lifetime as long as you have legal capacity.

How Does a Revocable Living Trust Work?

During your lifetime, you manage the trust assets just as you would your own property—you can buy, sell, invest, and use the assets as you see fit. If you become incapacitated, your successor trustee (whom you have named in advance) steps in and manages the trust assets on your behalf without court involvement. When you die, the successor trustee distributes the assets to your named beneficiaries according to the trust's terms, again without going through probate court.

Probate avoidance is the primary benefit—trust assets pass directly to beneficiaries without court proceedings, saving time and money. Privacy is another advantage, as trust distributions are private while probate proceedings are public record. Continuity of management during incapacity is provided without court guardianship. Limitations of a Revocable Living Trust

A revocable living trust does not provide asset protection from creditors during your lifetime (because you can revoke it, creditors can reach the assets). It does not reduce income taxes. And it only controls assets that are properly transferred into it—an unfunded trust is ineffective.
