Who We Are
HKH Elder Law was founded in 2002 with a focused purpose: to help families protect what they have built, plan for what lies ahead, and navigate the legal challenges that come with aging, illness, and loss. Estate planning, probate, and elder law are not sideline services for us; they are all we do.
Our firm is rooted in St. Petersburg, right in the heart of Tampa Bay. We know the local courts, we understand Florida Medicaid rules intimately, and we have guided hundreds of families through circumstances as complex and unique as their own. When you hire us, you do not get handed off to a paralegal or left to wonder what comes next. You get the whole team.
If you are searching for estate planning, probate, or Medicaid planning help in Tampa Bay right now, we are ready to help you move forward — starting with a free consultation.
Meet Our Founder

April D. Hill founded HKH Elder Law in 2002 with a background that is genuinely rare in this field. She holds a B.A. in Social Work, earned her law degree from Stetson University College of Law in 1997, served three years in the United States Army, and went on to earn dual board certifications in elder law.
Prior to founding HKH Elder Law, her career included pivotal work in helping to establish the Elder Justice Center at the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court; a program designed to help elderly individuals navigate the court system that has since become a model replicated across the United States.
She continues to teach and speak for community and legal education programs on elder law issues, and remains active in organizations including NAELA, the Florida Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Alzheimer's Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, and numerous local and statewide committees.
Legal Services for Every Stage of Life
Estate Planning
A comprehensive estate plan is one of the most important legal steps most people will ever take; and most wait too long to do it. We help you create wills, revocable living trusts, powers of attorney, health care directives, and living wills tailored to your family and goals. Whether your priority is avoiding probate, protecting minor children, minimizing taxes, or ensuring your wishes are honored in a health crisis, we build a plan around what matters to you.
Probate
Probate is the court-supervised process of administering a deceased person's estate, and in Florida, it can be complicated without experienced guidance. Deadlines must be met, creditors must be notified, and the courts move on their own schedule. We handle every phase of the probate process, from filing the will and inventorying assets to resolving creditor claims and distributing the estate. We discuss likely costs at the outset, so you always know what to expect.
Elder Law & Medicaid Asset Protection
If you or a loved one may need long-term care, Medicaid planning is one of the most urgent and consequential legal decisions you’ll face. The cost of nursing home or assisted living care can quickly exhaust a lifetime of savings. We help families understand Florida Medicaid eligibility rules, structure their assets lawfully to protect what they have worked for, and qualify for benefits without sacrificing financial security.
Health Care Directives & Living Wills
A living will tells your doctors exactly what you want (and don’t) if you become incapacitated. A healthcare surrogate designates someone you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf. Without these documents, those decisions fall to a court or to family members who may disagree. We help put these protections in place clearly, legally, and in a way that reflects your personal values.
Wills, Trusts, & Asset Protection
Florida law provides powerful tools for protecting assets during your lifetime and ensuring they pass to your beneficiaries efficiently. We work with families to evaluate whether a will, a revocable living trust, an irrevocable trust, or a combination of strategies is right for their situation. For families with members who have special needs or disabilities, we also structure trusts that preserve eligibility for government benefits like Medicaid.
Guardianship & Special Needs Planning
When a loved one loses the capacity to make decisions for themselves, guardianship proceedings become necessary. We guide families through this difficult legal process with care and clarity. For parents of children with disabilities, we also help create long-term plans, including special needs trusts, that protect both financial resources and government benefit eligibility for a lifetime.
